About Carpets and Kilims

THE BEGINNINGS...

Carpet weaving - involves a huge enterprise for designing a masterpiece

Originating from Persia (present-day Iran), carpets have had a 7000 year history. Throughout the course of this period, carpet-weavers have learnt the skills and techniques required to make carpets stronger, longer-lasting and more visually-stimulating. The art of carpet-weaving has also spread outside Persia, with the Turkish, Chinese, Indians and Arabs borrowing and adapting this art.

Carpet is not merely a piece of cloth but also represents tradition and the idea of passing on knowledge from generation to generation. Over the years, carpet weavers have learnt the best ways of knotting the carpet, the best dyes to use and the most suitable designs for a carpet of a particular size. Making a carpet is a huge enterprise – it is a collaboration of loom engineers, designers, weavers and other artistes of similar capacity.

Such expertise enables every carpet to be unique. Indeed, no two carpets are alike and each has a personality, a character.
